Hyatt's New Alila Mayakoba Brings a Different Kind of Luxury to the Riviera Maya

Mayakoba has always operated at a different register than the rest of the Riviera Maya. The gated resort community north of Playa del Carmen is home to Rosewood, Fairmont, and Banyan Tree properties, and now it has a new addition. Hyatt has opened Alila Mayakoba, a 182-room luxury retreat that marks the Alila brand's first property in Latin America and the Caribbean.

What Makes Alila Mayakoba Different from Other Riviera Maya Resorts

This property occupies the site of the former Andaz Mayakoba, which closed for a full renovation and rebrand. The transformation is significant. The room count dropped from 214 to 182, but the suite count nearly doubled — from 41 to 72. Almost 40 percent of the inventory is now suites, many with private plunge pools, spa-style bathrooms, and interior gardens. Entry-level rooms start at 538 square feet, which is generous by resort standards.

The design draws on Yucatán materials — locally sourced tropical hardwoods like tzalam and parota, hand-chiseled Mérida limestone, and reclaimed travertine. The interiors are meant to feel grounded in the peninsula rather than imported from a generic luxury playbook. The resort spans 60 acres across beachfront, lagoon, and jungle landscapes, with the lagoon-side areas positioned for couples seeking quiet and the beachfront zones designed for a more relaxed, family-accessible atmosphere.

The Wellness and Cultural Programming at Alila Mayakoba

Where Alila differentiates itself most clearly is in its approach to wellness and cultural immersion. The resort's signature experiences — called Alila Moments — are rooted in Mayan cosmology and local traditions. These include a water blessing ritual, a clay purification ceremony, and a collective journey to a private cenote. They're optional, but they set a tone that's distinct from the standard resort spa menu.

Spa Alila includes both indoor and outdoor treatment spaces, meditation gardens, communal hydrotherapy areas, and a traditional temazcal. The wellness programming is threaded throughout the property rather than confined to a single building, which reflects the brand's broader philosophy of integrating wellbeing into the entire stay rather than siloing it.

Practical Details for Booking Alila Mayakoba

Cash rates start around $500 per night in summer and approach $1,000 during winter and spring peak season. Mexico adds over 30 percent in taxes and fees on top of quoted rates, plus a $45 daily resort fee that's waived for Hyatt Globalist members and for all guests redeeming World of Hyatt points. For cash bookings, the Hyatt Privé program offers room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and hotel credits — worth asking your advisor about.

An introductory offer is available through May 31, 2026, for stays through the end of the year, including complimentary airport transfers and a signature wellness experience. The resort also sits within the broader Mayakoba community, giving guests access to El Camaleón, the Greg Norman-designed golf course considered one of the best in Latin America, plus a three-mile nature trail and a dive center.

If you're weighing Riviera Maya options and want help comparing Alila against the other Mayakoba properties or resorts further south toward Tulum, a travel advisor can help you sort through what fits.
