Bimini Just Got a Nonstop Flight from Miami — and It Changes Everything

For years, getting to Bimini meant a ferry from Fort Lauderdale, a seaplane, or a private charter. That changed on February 14 when American Airlines launched nonstop service from Miami — the first scheduled commercial flight from the U.S. to Bimini on a major carrier. The actual flight time on the inaugural run was 18 minutes.

What the New Miami-to-Bimini Route Looks Like

American Eagle operates the route using Embraer E175 regional jets, flying three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The scheduled block time is 52 minutes, though the actual time in the air is closer to 20-30 minutes — making it the shortest international route in American's network at roughly 64 miles.

Round-trip economy fares start around $400 or 20,000 AAdvantage miles plus taxes. Through Miami's hub, travelers from over 80 U.S. and Canadian cities can connect to Bimini in a single itinerary. That's the real shift here: Bimini is no longer a destination that requires separate ferry bookings or charter arrangements. It's now bookable like any other flight.

Why Bimini Works as a Quick Caribbean Getaway

Bimini is a small archipelago — North and South Bimini connected by a short causeway, with surrounding cays stretching outward. The island's identity has been built around water: fishing, diving, snorkeling, and boating. The waters are famously clear, and the proximity to deep water creates diving conditions that are hard to find elsewhere in the Bahamas.

The island is also home to the Bimini Biological Field Station — known as the Shark Lab — which has been studying shark behavior since 1990. For travelers interested in marine biology or eco-tourism, it adds a layer of substance beyond the standard beach-and-resort pitch. The three-day-a-week flight schedule supports the kind of short trips Bimini is built for: long weekends, midweek escapes, and repeat visits where you go back to the same spots in different conditions.

The Bigger Picture for Bahamas Travel

Bimini becomes American's seventh Bahamas destination from Miami, joining Nassau, Freeport, Marsh Harbour, North Eleuthera, George Town, and Governor's Harbour. The Bahamian government has also committed $80 million to upgrade South Bimini Airport as part of a broader Family Islands infrastructure project. That signals confidence that the demand will grow beyond these initial three weekly flights.

For travelers who want to explore the Bahamas beyond Nassau and Paradise Island, Bimini represents something different — smaller, quieter, more water-focused.
