Cancun and Riviera Maya Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Plan Your Trip

Every destination has its own rhythm. Cancún moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.

Why Cancún

Cancún delivers what most Caribbean destinations promise but few actually provide: genuine beauty, real culture, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating yourself. It's not a theme park version of paradise — it's the real thing, with rough edges and all.

Getting There

Fly into Cancún International Airport (CUN). Direct flights from major US cities run 2–5 hours depending on departure point. Mexican Peso (MXN), USD widely accepted in Hotel Zone is the local currency. Spanish (English widely spoken in tourist areas) is spoken throughout.

Best Time to Visit

December through April offer the best weather. Temperatures range from 73°F (23°C) to 91°F (33°C). Hurricane season runs June through November — travel insurance is essential during these months.

Where to Stay

At the quiet southern tip of the Hotel Zone where the Caribbean meets the lagoon. Two infinity pools, a Maya-inspired spa, and three restaurants. From $500/night. The most secluded upscale option.

What to Do

Two-and-a-half-hour drive to one of the New Seven Wonders. Go with a small-group tour that arrives before the crowds, typically departing at 6 AM. Budget $80–120 per person including guide and lunch. Worth every minute.

Ferry from Puerto Juárez (20 min, $15 round trip). Rent a golf cart ($35–50/day) and circle the island. Playa Norte, Punta Sur cliffs, the turtle farm. One of the best day trips in the Caribbean.

What to Know Before You Go

Learn three Spanish phrases: por favor, gracias, and la cuenta (the check). Bring pesos for better prices everywhere outside the Hotel Zone. The Hotel Zone is a 14-mile strip — know which end your hotel is on. Don't book everything through your hotel concierge — they take commissions. Download the R-012 bus app for public transit routes. And don't skip downtown Cancún — it's where the city's soul lives, and most first-timers never see it.
