Do You Need Certification to Be a Travel Agent in 2026?

Technically, no. You do not need a license, a degree, or a certification to sell travel in most U.S. states. But "technically" and "practically" are different things. Here is what you actually need to know.

The Legal Requirements (Shorter Than You Think)

Most U.S. states have no licensing requirement for selling travel. The exceptions: California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, and Washington have seller of travel registration requirements. These are state registrations, not certifications — they are about consumer protection, not proving your competence. Check your state's specific rules. Your host agency should help with this.

Outside the U.S., requirements vary. Canada, the UK, Australia, and the EU each have different regulatory frameworks. If you plan to operate internationally, research your specific jurisdiction.

Certifications That Actually Help Your Income

The Travel Institute offers three tiers: CTA (Certified Travel Associate), CTC (Certified Travel Counselor), and CTIE (Certified Travel Industry Executive). CLIA offers cruise-specific certifications. Destination-specific certifications — like becoming a Jamaica Travel Specialist or a Hawaii Destination Expert — come from the tourism boards themselves and are usually free.

Do these certifications increase your income? Indirectly, yes. They signal professionalism to clients, they deepen your product knowledge, and they sometimes unlock higher commission tiers with suppliers. A CLIA Master Cruise Counselor designation tells cruise lines you are serious, which can improve your preferred rates.

What Matters More Than Certifications

Destination expertise matters more than any certificate. A client choosing between two advisors — one with a CTA certification and generic knowledge, the other with no certification but deep expertise in Caribbean all-inclusives and a portfolio of happy client reviews — will choose the specialist every time.

Build knowledge in your niche first. Get certified to formalize and credential that knowledge. Do not chase certifications in categories you do not plan to sell.
