First Time in Nassau? 15 Things You Should Know Before Landing

Every destination has its own rhythm. Nassau moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.

What First-Timers Get Wrong About Nassau

Don't try to do everything in one trip. Nassau and Paradise Island have enough for 4–5 full days. Bring US dollars — they're accepted everywhere at 1:1 with the Bahamian dollar. The real Nassau isn't on Bay Street during cruise ship hours — visit early morning or after 5 PM when the ships leave. Book excursions before you arrive, especially the Exuma pig swim which sells out. And tip 15–20% at restaurants — service charges aren't always included despite what menus suggest.

How Many Days Do You Need?

Minimum 5 nights to get past the adjustment period and actually relax. A week is ideal. Anything less and you'll spend half your trip in transit and the other half rushing between attractions.

The One Thing You Must Do

Full-day trip by boat or puddle-jumper flight to Big Major Cay. The famous swimming pigs, nurse shark encounters, and Thunderball Grotto. Book early — trips sell out weeks ahead. Budget $250–400 per person.

What to Book Before You Go

Flights and accommodation (obviously). Airport transfers. The one excursion you absolutely don't want to miss. Dinner reservations at the one restaurant everyone recommends. Everything else can be figured out when you arrive.

Money and Tipping

Currency is Bahamian Dollar (BSD), USD accepted everywhere. Tip 15–20% at restaurants unless service charge is included. Tip excursion guides $5–10 per person. Tip hotel housekeeping $2–5 per day. Have small bills ready — breaking large notes is difficult at small businesses.

Working with a Travel Advisor

A travel advisor who knows Nassau personally can save you hours of research, get you room upgrades and resort credits, and make sure you don't waste time or money on the wrong experiences. Their commission comes from the resort — not from you.
