Costa Rica Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Every destination has its own rhythm. Costa Rica moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.

Why Costa Rica

Costa Rica delivers what most destinations promise but few provide — genuine beauty, real culture, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating yourself. It's not a theme park version of paradise. It's the real thing.

Getting There

Fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO). Direct flights from most major US cities. Currency: Costa Rican Colón (CRC), USD accepted at tourist businesses. Language: Spanish.

Best Time to Visit

December through April (dry season). Temperature range: 70°F (21°C) coast, 60°F (15°C) highlands to 90°F (32°C) coast, 75°F (24°C) highlands. Shoulder season (May–June, November) offers the best value with nearly identical weather.

What Not to Miss

Arenal Volcano — the iconic cone-shaped volcano with hot springs at its base. Tabacón Hot Springs is the most luxurious ($99 day pass). Baldi and Ecotermales are cheaper alternatives.

Monteverde Cloud Forest — misty highland forest with hanging bridges, ziplines, and incredible biodiversity. The night tour reveals a completely different ecosystem. $25 entry.

Local Food and Dining

Tamarindo — the most developed beach town on the Pacific coast. Surfing, nightlife, restaurants. Good base for day trips. Can feel touristy — that's the trade-off for convenience.

Planning Your Trip

Book accommodation and flights 3–4 months ahead for high season. One week is the sweet spot for trip length. A travel advisor who knows Costa Rica personally can handle the logistics and get you perks you wouldn't get booking direct.
