Maui, Hawaii Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
Every destination has its own rhythm. Maui moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.
Why Maui
Maui delivers what most destinations promise but few provide — genuine beauty, real culture, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating yourself. It's not a theme park version of paradise. It's the real thing.
Getting There
Fly into Kahului Airport (OGG). Direct flights from most major US cities. Currency: US Dollar (USD). Language: English, Hawaiian.
Best Time to Visit
April through November (dry season), whale season December–March. Temperature range: 66°F (19°C) to 85°F (29°C). Shoulder season (May–June, November) offers the best value with nearly identical weather.
What Not to Miss
Road to Hana — 64 miles of curves, waterfalls, bamboo forests, and black sand beaches. Start early, drive slow, and stop often. Full day minimum.
Ka'anapali Beach — Maui's main resort beach. Clear water, excellent snorkeling at Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a), and the nightly cliff diving ceremony at sunset.
Local Food and Dining
Mama's Fish House — the most celebrated restaurant in Hawaii. Oceanfront, tiki-style, with the fisherman's name on the menu next to each catch. Reservations weeks ahead. $70–120 per person.
Planning Your Trip
Book accommodation and flights 3–4 months ahead for high season. One week is the sweet spot for trip length. A travel advisor who knows Maui personally can handle the logistics and get you perks you wouldn't get booking direct.
