Getting Around Nassau: Jitney Buses, Taxis, Ferries, and Rental Cars

Every destination has its own rhythm. Nassau moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.

Getting to Nassau

The main airport is Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS). Direct flights are available from most major US cities during high season. Book flights early for the best rates — prices spike 6–8 weeks before departure.

Airport to Hotel

Taxis from the airport to Cable Beach run $25–30, to Paradise Island $35–40. No Uber or Lyft. Jitney buses cover most of the island for $1.25 per ride — ask locals which route you need. Car rental is available but you drive on the left (British style) and traffic in downtown is awful. Water taxis to Paradise Island cost $4 each way. For day trips to the Out Islands, book through a hotel concierge or reputable operator.

Getting Around Day-to-Day

Taxis are the most common tourist transport. Establish the fare before departing. Rental cars give freedom but check if you need an international driving permit. Public buses or minivans are the cheapest option where available.

Day Trip Transportation

Organized tours handle logistics for popular excursions. For independent exploration, rent a car or hire a driver for the day ($100–200 depending on distance). Ferries connect nearby islands where applicable.

Getting Home — Airport Tips

Allow extra time for return flights. Security and customs can be slow, especially on busy travel days. Arrive 3 hours before international departures. Spend remaining local currency at the airport or exchange before clearing security.

Digital Navigation

Download offline maps before you go. Google Maps works well in most tourist areas but can be unreliable on back roads. Save your hotel location as a pin. Cell coverage is usually good in resort areas but drops in remote spots.
