Santorini, Greece Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Every destination has its own rhythm. Santorini moves at a pace that rewards curiosity — the best experiences here aren't in the brochures, they're around the next corner.

Why Santorini

Santorini delivers what most destinations promise but few provide — genuine beauty, real culture, and enough variety to fill a week without repeating yourself. It's not a theme park version of paradise. It's the real thing.

Getting There

Fly into Santorini Airport (JTR). Direct flights from most major US cities. Currency: Euro (EUR). Language: Greek (English widely spoken in tourist areas).

Best Time to Visit

April through October (peak: July–August). Temperature range: 54°F (12°C) to 84°F (29°C). Shoulder season (May–June, November) offers the best value with nearly identical weather.

What Not to Miss

Oia sunset — the most famous sunset viewing point in Greece. Arrive 2 hours early for a spot at the castle ruins. It's crowded for a reason — the caldera views are extraordinary.

Akrotiri archaeological site — a Minoan city buried by the volcanic eruption in 1600 BC. The 'Pompeii of the Aegean.' Covered excavation site. €12 entry. Fascinating.

Local Food and Dining

Ammoudi Bay — tiny fishing port below Oia, accessible by 300 steps. Tavernas serve fresh-caught fish right at the water's edge. The best seafood meal on the island.

Planning Your Trip

Book accommodation and flights 3–4 months ahead for high season. One week is the sweet spot for trip length. A travel advisor who knows Santorini personally can handle the logistics and get you perks you wouldn't get booking direct.
